What is Silica?

Silica, scientifically known as silicon dioxide (SiO2), is a chemical compound composed of one silicon atom and two oxygen atoms. It is the most abundant constituent of the Earth’s crust and occurs in various crystalline forms, such as quartz, tridymite, and cristobalite, as well as in amorphous forms. Silica is a key component of sand and is found naturally in many rocks and minerals. It possesses unique physical and chemical properties that make it significant for various industrial applications, including the manufacture of glass, ceramics, and concrete, and in the production of silicon-based electronics and semiconductors.

Monitoring Silica in Water

Monitoring silica in water is a critical component of ensuring the quality and efficiency of water treatment processes. Silica, or silicon dioxide (SiO2), naturally occurs in most water sources and can form scales on surfaces, leading to inefficiencies and damage in water treatment systems, boilers, and cooling towers. The presence of silica in water, especially at high concentrations, can also indicate the depletion of demineralisers, which are crucial for removing minerals from water in various industrial applications. To maintain system efficiency and protect infrastructure, it’s essential to accurately measure the levels of silica. The use of silica monitors and analysers enables the detection of silica levels in real time, allowing for immediate adjustments in water treatment processes. This proactive approach ensures that the final water quality meets the required standards and extends the lifespan of treatment equipment by preventing silica-related scaling and damage.
