What Is Ozone in Water Treatment?

Ozone (O₃) is a powerful oxidising agent made up of three oxygen atoms. In water treatment, it is widely used as a primary disinfectant due to its ability to rapidly destroy bacteria, viruses and other pathogens. Ozone works by oxidising cell walls and disrupting vital cellular functions, effectively inactivating microorganisms and improving water quality.

One of the key advantages of ozone is that it decomposes back into oxygen (O₂) after use, leaving no long-lasting chemical residual. This makes it a preferred solution in potable water treatment, advanced oxidation processes, wastewater reuse, and high-purity industrial applications where chemical carryover must be minimised.

However, because ozone is highly reactive and unstable, precise control and verification are essential. This is where a reliable ozone analyser becomes critical.

Monitoring Ozone in Water Treatment

Monitoring ozone in water treatment is essential to ensure disinfection is both effective and controlled. As a powerful oxidant, ozone can inactivate a broad range of pathogens, making it highly effective for drinking water and advanced treatment applications. However, successful operation depends on maintaining the correct dose. Too little ozone may result in incomplete pathogen inactivation, while excessive dosing can increase operating costs and contribute to the formation of unwanted by-products such as bromate.

An industrial ozone analyser plays a critical role in maintaining this balance. It continuously measures dissolved ozone concentration, residual ozone after contact time, and ozone levels at key control points within the treatment process. By verifying both the applied dose and the remaining residual, operators can confirm that disinfection targets are being achieved without over-oxidation.

Continuous ozone measurement supports compliance with New Zealand drinking water standards while optimising efficiency, safeguarding public health and preserving treated water quality.
